Refrigerating bread is generally not advisable because cold temperatures can have a drying effect, leading the bread to become stale more quickly. The low humidity in the refrigerator accelerates the staling process, causing the bread to lose its soft texture and become hard or chewy over time. Instead, store bread at room temperature in a cool, dry place, such as a bread box or a sealed paper bag, which helps retain its moisture while allowing some airflow to prevent mold.
If you need to keep bread fresh for an extended period, consider freezing it. Freezing preserves the bread’s quality without drying it out. Simply wrap the bread tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in a freezer-safe bag. When you’re ready to use it, thaw the bread at room temperature or toast slices directly from frozen. This method maintains the bread’s texture and taste much better than refrigeration.
