4. The Prestige
Released in 2006, “The Prestige” is a psychological thriller directed by Christopher Nolan, with the screenplay co-written by Nolan and his brother Jonathan.
The film focuses on the fierce rivalry between two magicians, Angier and Borden. Their obsession, secrecy, and willingness to sacrifice drive them into a dangerous battle of wits and skill, each trying to outdo the other with increasingly perilous tricks—leading to disastrous outcomes.
At its core, the movie explores the lengths one might go to dedicate themselves entirely to their art. The character Chung Ling Soo serves as a metaphor for this theme, illustrating total devotion to one’s craft, as noted by Shewman. According to Manugian, while “obsession” is the central theme, the film also delves into the “nature of deceit” and the concept of “science as magic.”
“The Prestige” was recognized with several award nominations, including Academy Award nods for Best Art Direction (Nathan Crowley and Julie Ochipinti) and Best Cinematography (Wally Pfister). It was also nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form, in 2007.
Since its release, the film’s reputation has grown considerably. In 2009, The A.V. Club named “The Prestige” as one of the best films of the 2000s.
